What is iT about?

77% percent of people prefer to age in place within their homes and communities.

However, systemic barriers—including housing affordability, transportation limitations, and social isolation—often prevent them from doing so successfully.

Effectively addressing these barriers requires a deeper understanding of the daily challenges older adults face when navigating their environments and accessing essential supports.

This conference offers participants unique interactive sessions and knowledgeable speakers with insight into removing barriers for aging in place.

What's on the agenda:

Aging in community Simulation Workshop

Participants will have the unique opportunity to engage in a role-playing simulation of one month in an older adult’s life. By navigating various scenarios, attendees will develop a deeper understanding of these experiences and help identify potential solutions in their own lives or in their community.

"This work is about honesty, tenderness, storytelling, and connection. It’s about making room for the hard conversations and the joy. However you want to approach this chapter—curious, afraid, practical, spiritual, or all of the above—you don’t have to do it alone."

Come hear Death Doula, Emmy-Nominated writer, and Cultural Anthropologist Darnell Walker speak about preparing for the end while embracing life more fully.

THE VILLAGE MODEL

Learn about The Village Model, community-based, nonprofit organizations that provide social connections and a wide range of support to help older adults remain in their own homes and communities as they age. These typically member-based organizations provide access to services like transportation, home repairs, social activities, and vetted service providers through volunteer and staff support. Hear experts from 2 successful Villages  in our region (Rapp at Home in Rappahannock County and LOWLINC in Orange County), and learn how Villages can be the answer to helping older adults live independently in their homes with confidence and peace of mind as they age.

Deep Dive Table Talks

The afternoon program will feature table talks where participants can learn about various subjects, including food access, legal and financial aid, housing, caregiver support, innovative approaches to Alzheimer's Disease, hospice, technology, ageism, and more.

Attendees are welcome to join the tables that interest them to listen and engage with the speakers and facilitators.
